Binocular vision dysfunction is a condition that causes a small amount of eye misalignment. When one eye sees images slightly out of alignment with the other eye, the brain responds to the misalignment by overusing the eye muscles to create single focus vision. This process causes stress and strain on the eye muscles which can result in various symptoms including headaches, dizziness or lightheadedness, anxiety, and problems with reading.
The misalignment of the eyes can be caused by normal facial asymmetry. A person can also experience acquired facial asymmetry following head trauma from sports or a car accident.
These conditions are often difficult to diagnose because the symptoms may not be recognized as being due to a binocular vision problem. Furthermore, BVD is often not detected during a standard vision examination.
Anxiety (especially in open spaces or while driving)
Sensitivity to light
Neck and shoulder discomfort
Poor depth perception
Unsteadiness while walking
Problems with reading (words running together/ skipping lines)
Dr. Aversa, your qualified and trusted Hasbrouck Heights optometrist, completed a comprehensive externship led by the pioneers of BVD research. This training has qualified him to diagnose and treat patients with this condition. A specialized questionnaire is used to determine if a patient might be suffering from BVD.
If you think you might be a candidate for a BVD examination, contact our Lodi optometrist today to take the questionnaire.
Eye misalignment is treated by placing special balancing lenses into eyeglasses. The lenses work by redirecting images in a way which realigns the eyes. Removing the strain on the eye muscles significantly reduces the symptoms of BVD.

I had light headedness, dizziness, and nausea. I felt overwhelmed, anxious and very uncomfortable while walking in a large department store until Dr. Aversa changed my lenses. Now I am able to see and feel comfortable walking, reading and relaxing. Thank you Dr. Aversa!
Before I was seen by Dr. Aversa, I was experiencing difficulty reading, headaches, dizziness, and unsteadiness while walking. He prescribed me special lenses that fit my exact needs. It has been a little over a month and I feel a lot better, mainly with reading and unsteadiness while walking. Switching to Heights Eye Center has been a beneficial experience for me personally and I look to continue to come here in the future.
Before I changed my glasses I would get frequent headaches and motion sickness. My anxiety also used to be very high and hard to control. Since having changed my glasses to correct the imbalance with my eye muscles, I have seen such an improvement. My motion sickness is now more tolerable and my anxiety is controllable. I am no longer troubled with constant neck and headaches. Overall, the switch in prescription was the best solution for me!
I was in a tractor trailer accident and was hospitalized for 5 days with no memory of the accident. I suffered from contusions and brain swelling which resulted in fatigue, headaches, double vision, and anxiety for 3 months. The first time I visited Dr. Aversa after the accident, I had to hold on to the walls while walking in the office. Within a few hours of wearing my prism lenses, all of my symptoms improved. With each subsequent visit, I felt better and better. Now, I am able to walk steadily on my own and my fatigue, headaches, double vision, and anxiety are gone.
