Contact Lens Exams From Our Hasbrouck Optometrist

If your recent vision test revealed the need for corrective lenses, you may already have your heart set on contact lenses instead of (or perhaps in addition to) eyeglasses. Contacts certainly have their advantages, not only as an "invisible" form of vision correction but also in their suitability for active, rough-and-tumble jobs and sports. But you can't actually get those contacts until you complete one more necessary step -- a contact lens exam from our Hasbrouck optometrist at Heights Eye Center.

Why Are Contact Lens Exams Necessary?

If you needed or wanted nothing more than eyeglasses, the vision test would provide us with all the data we need to produce an ideal pair of corrective lenses for you. But that's because eyeglasses don't physically interact with your eyes; they merely sit on the bridge of your nose. Since contacts must reside for hours or even days at a time in direct contact with your eyes, we must be especially cautious in how those contacts are fitted and which type of contact lens in Lodi we advise for your specific needs. The wrong size, shape or style of lenses can cause serious irritation or even damage to the sensitive tissues of your corneas. At the very least, they may fail to correct your vision adequately. Contact lens exams help to ensure that you'll be completely comfortable and happy with the contacts you receive from us.

What to Expect During Your Contact Lens Exam

Measuring your eyes in detail is a critical part of every contact lens exam. Our Hasbrouck optometrist, Dr. Aversa, will take precise measurements of your pupils and irises to make sure your lenses will be the right size. A light-based technique called keratometry measures your corneal curvature, while a digital procedure called corneal topography records every tiny deviation from those contours.

Now that we have the necessary data to create your contacts, we need to figure out what kind of contacts make the most sense for you. We do this by discussing your lifestyle, vision issues and any related conditions that may dictate your lens choice. For instance:

  • If you need to be able to see clearly from the second you first wake up, you may want extended-wear contacts that you can sleep in.
  • If you want to have clean, fresh contacts every day without the maintenance hassles, you'll want single-use disposable lenses.
  • If you have a strong corrective prescription, you may need rigid gas permeable contacts instead of soft contacts, or you might need multifocal lenses to correct presbyopia.
  • If you have a corneal abnormality called keratoconus, we may even recommend scleral contacts that vault over the entire cornea.
